The QBL Group is proud of a recently published paper, where we have joined efforts with the experimental group of Henrik Mouritsen (Professor of Biology in Oldenburg, Germany). Together we believe that we have strong evidence to pinpoint the right magnetoreceptor molecule in migratory birds. Experiments have hinted on a specific protein, that has not been crystalized before. Ph. D. student Emil Sjultstok used computations (supercomputer ABACUS) to predict the 3D shape of this receptor in atomistic details. The project started nearly 3 years ago and the results were finally published in Current Biology, which is one of the forefront journals to publish great discoveries in Biology; in this specific case it also emphasizes the importance of computations in shedding light on one great mystery.
